EFT Supervision
My Approach to EFCT | EFIT | EFFT Supervision
Good supervision in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) or any other therapeutic approach involves several key elements. Here’s what I prioritize in my EFT consultation/supervision:
1. Supportive and Safe Environment: Creating a space where supervisees feel safe to explore their clinical work without fear of judgment is essential in my mind. This encourages openness and honest reflection.
2. Clear Structure and Goals: Setting clear objectives for supervision sessions helps keep the process focused and productive. This includes identifying specific skills or issues to address. Having a specific focus helps to streamline our efforts and ensure we make the most of our time together.
3. Use of Video Review: In EFT, it’s the preferred way to review recorded sessions in supervision/consultation. This allows for focused and concrete feedback and helps supervisees see their strengths and areas for improvement.
4. Focus on Attachment: In EFT, understanding and working with attachment processes is central. In my supervision practice, I aim to help clinicians deepen their understanding of attachment theory and how it guides us in every session.
5. Skill Development: ICEEFT has provided us with specific EFT/EFIT/EFFT skills to focus on as we help clinicians work towards certification. These micro and macro skills become our focus because honing these skills makes for a competent therapist.
6. Reflective Practice: Encouraging supervisees to reflect on their own emotional responses and how these impact their therapeutic work is important for personal and professional growth.
7. Understanding the EFT Map and Theoretical Underpinnings: Ensuring that supervisees are grounded in and understand the EFT map that Sue Johnson has laid out for us is key. Grasping the essential theoretical underpinnings helps clinicians maintain fidelity to the approach, ensuring they can effectively apply its principles and techniques in their practice.
8. Constructive Feedback: Offering focused and balanced feedback that highlights strengths while also providing constructive criticism helps supervisees grow without feeling overwhelmed.
9. Therapist Self-Care: Addressing the importance of self-care and helping supervisees develop strategies to manage their own stress and emotional well-being is crucial for long-term effectiveness.
10. Ongoing Learning: Encouraging supervisees to engage in continuous learning, through workshops, reading, and additional training, ensures they remain up-to-date with the latest developments in EFT and other therapeutic approaches.
My Goals for EFT Supervision
My supervision goals include sharpening my ability to tune into your needs with empathy and insight, conceptualizing cases through an attachment lens, and refining interventions to facilitate lasting positive change for your clients. By integrating feedback and insights gained from supervision sessions into your practice, I strive to enhance your clinical effectiveness and outcomes.
Whether you’re working with individuals, couples, or families, as an EFT certified supervisor with 14 years of experience, I deeply understand the certification process and the nuances of practicing EFT across various modalities.

I feel invigorated and inspired after I apply the work that Robin and I work in supervision together with my couples. What I notice is that there is immediate and profound transformation in my next session with the couple I have brought into supervision. I bring to my most complex couples into supervision, and Robin provides me with a lot of material to apply, and we are able to role play together the areas where I feel stuck. This experiential learning is invaluable for me. Robin's gift is the ability to stay steady and stick with the attachment messages.
